Description

Indications:

Diazepam is a long acting benzodiazepine. It is used for conditions like anxiety disorders, convulsions, impaired sleep, alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasm, and provision of sedation prior to surgical procedures.

Mechanism of Action:

It exerts its effect on central nervous system (especially limbic system, cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum) by potentiating the effect of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABAA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This binding increases the frequency with which chloride channels open, thereby increasing its conductance. This in turn results in hyperpolarization of neuronal synapses which reduces neuronal conduction.
