Description
Indications:
This medication is prescribed for individuals suffering from chronic or severe insomnia. It helps in reducing sleep latency (time taken to fall asleep), prolonging sleep duration, and minimising sleep disruptions. Additionally, it is used in children with myoclonic seizures to manage convulsive episodes.
Mechanism of Action:
Nitrazepam binds to GABA-A receptors, amplifying the effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter responsible for reducing brain excitability. By increasing chloride ion influx, it hyperpolarises neuronal cells, preventing excessive electrical activity in the brain. Furthermore, its anticonvulsant properties stem from its ability to slow down sodium channel recovery, reducing the likelihood of seizures.
