Description
Indications:
Codeine is an analgesic and is used for the treatment of mild to moderate acute or chronic pain for which other non-pharmacological and pharmacological (NSAIDS, paracetamol) interventions did not produce desirable results. It helps alleviate diarrhea and dry cough.
Mechanism of Action:
Its action is similar to but less potent than morphine. It binds to µ opioid receptors in the CNS. This association increases the pain threshold thereby reducing its perception. Like all opioids, it is also a CNS depressant and can cause respiratory depression along with sedation and drowsiness.
