Description

Indications:

Modafinil 200 mg is prescribed to combat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep-related disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). It helps patients stay awake and maintain mental alertness throughout the day. It is also sometimes used off-label for managing attention-deficit symptoms, neurological fatigue, or to support cognitive function in specific medical scenarios.

Mechanism of Action:

Modafinil stimulates wakefulness by increasing dopamine levels in the brain through selective inhibition of the dopamine transporter (DAT). Additionally, it modulates other neurotransmitter systems, including norepinephrine, orexin, histamine, and glutamate, while suppressing GABA activity. These combined neurochemical effects support enhanced cognitive alertness without the overstimulation linked to classical stimulants.
